ABOUT
My foray into book arts began as a student working in the Rare Books division of the Princeton University library where I first came into contact with finely crafted, limited edition books, printed on handmade paper, and exquisitely bound. A letterpress studio in the Visual Arts department became my laboratory, and before long I was producing broadsides, invitations, and ephemera for the university community.
In the early 1980s I moved to the West Coast and immersed myself in the burgeoning letterpress renaissance, first working for Berliner Type Foundry and later at MacKenzie-Harris of San Francisco. In 1986 Vermont-based Stinehour Press offered me an opportunity to manage their electronic type department as well as provide book design for museums and publishers throughout the country.
Since 1993 I have been pursuing a freelance design career, producing books, catalogues, posters, annual reports, invitations, and other miscellany. A well-designed book is the result of careful attention to detail, an awareness of the historical foundations of typography, and the ability to harmonize these elements into a unified vessel of knowledge.
